1843: An ordinance relating to the maintenance of the destitute was passed in South Australia.

1849: The Destitute Board was appointed.

1851: Destitute Asylum was established in Adelaide. It provided accommodation for the destitute people, including children and a separate lying in home for pregnant girls.
